The name of ‘Rushcutters’ comes from what the British used to call the area, ‘Rush Cutting Bay’. Early settlers cut down tall rushes that were found in the swampy bay to use for thatching their houses. In the late 19th century, the swamp was reclaimed and the land was set aside for recreation, and thus the park was created.
Today, Rushcutters Bay is a sought after location to work and play. It is close to everything, but feels like it’s a part of the forest that would have covered the cove centuries ago.
