FAST-GROWING AND SOUGHT-AFTER ZETLAND
Zetland gets its name from an old way to spell ‘Shetland’ and was named after the 2nd Earl of Zetland, Thomas Dundas. The area was originally a lagoon and swamp, like that which can be found in Centennial Park nearby. It was drained in the early twentieth century to create a racecourse.
After World War II, Zetland became semi-industrial, with factories and warehouses for vehicle production. Since then, it has been gentrified into an up-and-coming, high-density residential area. The most notable new building is the SKYE Suites at Green Square, with its unique curvy design.
Green Square is the main transport hub in the area, with trains stopping along the airport and south west lines. Three bus routes also service Zetland, and the soon-to-be opened Waterloo Metro station will be in walking distance.
